You say 'Thus at its worst, assuming say a ratio of 1.5 : 1 of avatars to users, 1.8m gross avatar logins and say 66% churn, Second Life would be on something like 400,000 actual users in reality. An "industry standard" 33% churn puts them at about 800,000 users therefore.'
This is not the calculation at its worst. It could in fact be much worse -- we know that at least 20% of the last million Residents are not counted as having ever logged in in the first place, the bailout rate is very high, and the avatars/user ratio is higher for the avid users than the casual users. We don't even know if there are a hundred thousand regular users of SL, where by regular I mean "Comes back for a second month."
Actually, Shirky took a blogosphere story and ran with it without really giving credit where it was due. The SL blogosphere has been ripping apart those numbers for months. Even the people I disagree with the most within the blogosphere were dead-on about the numbers WAY before Shirky stood on the work of others.
@ Clay....I agree, the true underlying user patterns with these places are very hard to work out - I have no idea what the mean user time per week is for example.
@ Taran.....you may be right, be very interested to pick up some other references - I did surf your blog too However, the analysis has all been fairly recent - I recall trying to dig into this in September when I heard the million user mark and it definitely did not ring true with my experience, and I saw very little written..and most I saw was very vague / veiled at best. |
