it's step in the next direction because it recognizes that i don't want to use one monolithic service for everything social.
i can use flickr for photos, tumblr for short form blogging, typepad for long form blogging, twitter for microblogging, youtube for videoblogging, etc that in and of itself is a step forward. fred
But Fred, all those other services have been around quite awhile.
And whats the effective difference between this one aggregating all that stuff and wanting Yet Another Social Network set up within its walls to use it, and A Previous Monolith That Cannot Be Mentioned? The question that really needs answering is "where are you going to comment". If its not in FriendFeed, then its a pass though as I use it - aggregate and pump to email. And if it is in Friendfeed then all these other systems - Blogs, Twitter etc - dry up. But the problem Friendfeed then has is it then kills itself, because those are its sources.

Had a look at Google+ reviews briefly, reminds me of Friendfeed but as it would be done by guys whose previous successes were Buzz and Wave. Anyway a lot of the A listers seem to be spouting the same shill saying much the same as they did about Friendfeed
