I love Brighton too, but the standard of living there is as high as London meaning talent and costs are not much more affordable. Plus the University seems to be more interested in the Arts than creating science or maths grads crucial to a thriving tech scene. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, but that's my impression.
Interesting point re the Uni. I have a hypothesis that the UK's schtick is not infrastructure tech, but media - simply because it can sell this stuff on a global market and thus build a big business fast.
I also think that the "tech" is now commoditising to the point that tech savvy "content" people can start to do really creative stuff on top of it. If the Uni could lead the way in creative tech media that would be great, and if it could "hub" liek Cambridge has that would be even better. Take your point re costs though - there is no benefit to being 1.5 hours out of London with no cost benefits |
