Good posting; tried to comment, but website was overwhelmed; probably all of us Twitter followers;D
Reading book on similar thread: "In the Beginning Was the Command Line" by Neal Stephenson. Very apt analogies and humor.
"It's the same thing all over again" is your theme, Alan, and to be fair, there's a lot of validity to that view, as I know we both agree.
I am interested, though, in what's new as well. Are we yet in a place where we can identify that? Same thing + mainstream + broadband = new in a way Same thing + globalism = new in a way Same thing + bullish IT market = new in a way Same thing + brands aware we're talking about them = new in a way Look forward to our next chat.
@sam - I need to sort out or user hostile Captchas..and am fan of Neal Stephenson too!
@Ian You are right re differences, but the temptation to poke fun at the revisionistas is too hard to resist. Fwiw in our "formal" analytical material we would say that what has changed is: Same rules + broadband + huge (global) penetration + lower cost of build + interactive closed systems. I'm currently reading "Farewell to Alms" that also argues that the Printing revolution occurred in the world of subsistence economics, whereas this one is happening in the world of increasing return economics. Still haven't thought through what that means though. |
