How true. I lived for several years in Bavaria, in one of the riches (ie. most expensive) towns in one of the highest per Capita income countries of the world. After 2 years in SE England, we are moving back there because the quality of life is so much better and cost of living so much lower ..
When I tried to get to the bottom of it years ago as a callow mgmnt consultant, I was told high land prices drove higher supply costs in the UK. Then I lived in New York, which (at the time) was more expensive than London - yet everything was cheaper. There didn't seem to be that much of a diff in competition levels either - but people were far more interested in good value and less tolerant of overpricing.
