Judging by the number of notifications I am getting on my Facebook from my network doing stuff, my money is on Facebook not recanting. As individuals whose information has been co-opted for many years by banks, insurance companies and retailers, we are proverbial frogs in the pan of cold water and it's just getting pleasantly warm. http://www.realtea.net/inside_out
I believe that we should be more concerned at 23andme and the Gataca like-world it enables - as I add up all of the information held online about me (http://www.realtea.net/who_is_gammydodger), I wonder how I might regain control of my personal data.
Good points - blogged my thought in an addendum re individuals in warm water
Your 23andme point is well taken,..as I noted above, I thought it would be some rapacious small guy who got the whole privacy thing going.
They clearly have a blank check approach in mind so that they can do whatever they want as it comes to mind, without regard for their users. While this may be good for a garage stage startup, it isn't such a good way of doing things for a company that has reached the level of Facebook. I don't know that they will change by the date you have in mind, but eventually they are going to have to make some changes or they are going to find themselves in a regulatory nightmare.

I suspect the regulatory issue will be the biggest blocker on valuation, though I think you are right that the insidious impact on users will be the real "hit" they will take...but hey, I could be wrong - what was it P T Barnum said...
