I find the biggest challege with linkedin (and almost every social network) is that my contacts have to opt-in. Of course, that's a good thing in most ways: I'd hate it if my contacts listed me all over the web. But, since my "real world" contact sphere isn't represented online and my "online world" contact sphere isn't necessarily local (or where I frequent), my linkedin network doesn't model my actual sphere of business contacts. Not sure how we reconcile that?
Good point re modelling....in general the closer a model is to real life the more useful it is. Email is actually the closest representation to my real life I think (esp if I aggregate F/B and Linked In prompts as part of the Email).
