Saw some of
the furore on the blogosphere this morning, had a look at lunch time
over here. I've reproduced it here.
According to the blurb about the 2012 Olympic Logo it's:
The powerful, modern emblem symbolises the dynamic Olympic spirit and its inspirational ability to reach out to people all over the world.
Omigod.......it is just so bad it is not even funny, I'm ashamed to be a Londoner. Apparently it "reaches out to young people". Oh yeah, and to do what exactly?
Is this really the best design that anybody could think of? (One assumes they used focus groups, would like to know what they were on as that is something to
definitely avoid)
Dunno* how much they paid Wolff Olins, but I reckon we could've done better down the pub for the price of a few beers and a packet of pork scratchings. Okay, two packets and some coloured paper and scissors
* Allegedly £400,000 - $800,000 !!
(Its probably indicative of how the whole London Olympic overspend is arising, I suspect - hamateur management overpaying for (at best) mediocre, overpriced services across the board. Hint - don't pay the fees until you get a better design !! )
So, how can we use the new 'Net to help...well, one thing is to petition your MP at
Theyworkforyou.com
- since we're paying for it we should have a say in it !!!
But we also have another suggestion - how about a website where people design their own brands and other people vote on those designs? If this is Pro Talent, then I can't believe that it would not be possible to do a lot better using enthusiastic amateurs.
Hell, we could run that site up in a few days here at Broadsight at a fraction of the cost of this cr*.......(in fact this is so appalling maybe we'll do that tonight - contact us if you think its a good idea)
Sort of User Generated Design......with Hot or Not ratings. London 2012.20
Postscript...read tonight its supposed to be the numbers 2012....looks more like a Rorschach test to me (apparently some people seem to see Lisa Simpson doing unspeakable things in it...and it also looks like the BBC beat us to the post with a
website for alternative designs - but check this out for one of the
alternative public designs submitted before it was rapidly taken off the BBC site.....).
