Was watching a program on TV tonight (rare for me now) on the roots of Punk music - and the point was made that the return to a simple type of music that was both good to listen to - and easy to play - unleashed a wave of creativity with large numbers of really amateur - or even non musicians "giving it a go" in garages across the world.
The similarities with the last few years on the 'Net were interesting - an existing large music market but many people feeling that the mainstream music media was stuck up its own A&R's and no longer reflecting music tastes, the emergence of lower cost technologies to make music (and video), the emergence of small low cost clubs to consume it. A whole host of "gifted amateurs" made a major impact.
After a while it self destructed, went mainstream, and got absorbed by the larger owners of media - but it changed the agenda for many people for a while.
( Disclosure...I was in one of those garage bands...it stayed in the garage fortunately for humanity
