Enjoyed the post.
I've been on and off with Quora for quite awhile now and decided to give it more of a go a few months back. And then it went nuts over Christmas, new follower notifications filled my inbox. Thankfully all turned off now and I can claim my inbox back. Who are the 'cool people' on Quora? Can I be one? Or will I simply become a 'dumb punter' when too many people join? Whenever that might be. You make lots of great observations, and there is no doubt that crowdsourcing can have its own problems. But it strikes me that the same rules of community need to be applied to Quora - good content curation and moderation. The challenge will be in creating a set of objective rules or guidelines that ensure the value of the questions and answers is maintained. Who sets the rules? The 'cool people' or the 'dumb punters'?
"2. Right now its fun because its new and small, there is thus a minimum of spam and spurious answers, and all the "cool people" are on it talking about what they like to talk about, so it's the new new shiny thing."
Exactly. This is the oft-forgotten part. The exact reason people like the service is the same reason they will soon grow to dislike it. Just like bars, clubs, bands, and everything else in culture.
Of course some unexpectedly good things might come out of it, and certain micro-grandees will get a shortlived buzz riding the wave... but agree with you largely re what follows. Given the lack of quantum technology leap, and without a growing support and moderation infrastructure tis highly predictable.
Granted I've had a couple of good experiences on LinkedIn Answers for certain things, but generally I reckon it's better to go to properly managed specialist online community sans the glamour (forums, groups, etc, they're pretty Ronseal) and pose your question there. But then I would say that |

A million mailboxes were seemingly seeded with Quora invites over the last few days (grassroots or astroturf? the jury is still out, the question unanswered), a million flowers thenceforth bloomed, and our twitterstream filled up with irritating autotwts.
