Hmm.
Two unrelated implications: The Washington Post is reaching more Congressmen and FTC commissioners than Facebook users. Zuck has made his deals based on the nearly 500 milliion users. The real reason opt out is the default is because that number drops percipitously if they are required to opt in, for two reasons. First, the inactive facebook profiles will never gat the message to opt-in. Second, they would have to convince the active users of the advantages of opting in. However they do seem to have a plan if DC requires opt-in as the default: Jeff Jarvis recently announced book about the benefits of being public.
