Sandra Gidley, then the Lib Dems' women's spokesperson, wrote an article a few years ago in a broadsheet, suggesting that women don't enter politics because they do not like cat fights and public speaking. I took exception to that in a very strongly worded email to her, to which she replied, explaining that her article had been edited and made FUBAR. Now you may remember how we first met! Needless to say I find such "targeted" events, in equal parts, sad and patronising. Skill development is one thing but to suggest women can't speak in public as a gender marker of some kind is insulting to say the least (I do note it is not your suggestion so this criticism is of the idea not of who articulates it!). Thanks,
Hi Shefaly - Reason I put it up was Laura told me she went to one for herself and was amazed at all the women who said they were very nervous - and when she suggested at the end they do a sort of less formal session - more unconferencey - there was huge interest - so that's why she decided to do it.
