Interesting, I have a post in draft about the value of social capital from social networking sites and how little has really changed. Must get round to finishing it.
There is an argument that social media is not actually making us more social, or widening our mental horizons. Rather it enables us to protect our world view by only associating with those that echo our own stance, we can pick what topics we recieve news about thanks to RSS and we can shield ourselves from almost everything nasty in the world. Except sometimes something horrid doesn't sneak in, like Jan Moir's article or Griffin's QT appearance, shaking us in of our well protect nest of niceness. That, I think, is why the outrage is so fierce, we're reminded that there's a world out there that we're doing very well on not dealing with, that humans are petty and irrational. Of course we must react, so we retweet, join the facebook group and have long real life debates in the office or down the pub, none of which take much effort or indeed actually do anything, though we'll crow in victory if Moir and the Mail are actually sanctioned or the BNP implodes in a haze of exposed fuzzy logic. rant over
Or how about posting me your draft
I think I agree with that argument, we can now create our own echo chambers. The thing that interested me about Griffin was you just knew the Law of Unintended Consequences was going to take hold, it was predictable and yet the Chatterati wstill ent for it online and on-air. (I think iyt was predictable because, however reprehensible the BNP is, they are picking up and running with immigration - or more accurately its underresourcing and unstructured nature - a real public issue that has long been ignored) |

Cory Doctorow has a piece rebutting "Social Media Deniers" in the Grauniad. Its good as far as it goes, here are the criticisms and rebuttals (expurgated version): It's inconsequential – most of the verbiage on Twitter, Facebook and the like is banal
