Good post Alan. This makes the future a mix of Techcrunch and Techmeme, which I can see. Azeem's Viewsflow is in this space too.
You make a great point re potential revenues as well. I'm starting to think that the future industryi might consist of a large number of smallish communities that make a little off advertising and some more from other services to the community. Subs for news may not be a big contributor.
Such a news site would largely attract ABC1s, and thus be a prime target for advertisers - particularly those that wanted to build brand rather than drive response. And the advertising community seems (finally) to be moving away from click-through and page impressions as the sole measure of effectiveness (at least for a while).
I think you can sum up Craig's point in far less words as "we have a lot of very shit editors at the moment". But I'd disagree with his solution: what fixes this isn't "replace editors with second-rate automation", but better editors. And that requires publishers who promote people with independence, rather than those who they know will be "available" to advertisers... |
