Alan,
In your "What's not" hot section, what about adding email?
Seeing as the PAYG internet access deals are really awful, I think there is a disconnect between wanting web-connectable devices and then not wanting to pay. Oh wait? They want it for free, don't they? How is 'not wanting to pay' an insight into teenagers' psyches? I file these things under 'BFO' - blinding flash of the obvious.
I'd add that teens aren't the only people who think DJs that prattle on are w*nkers!
I've always thought so, and still do. Maybe people would be willing to pay for streaming music without inane DJ ramblings?
@Jas - I took it off the article, thats their "Not Hot" but I guess email would be there too
@Shefaly its more an insight into a teenager's wallet @ Improbulus - I think that's the plan - Roberta of Spotify needs to talk more, then we'd all go premium
I loved this piece when I read it in the FT too.
I guess the most interesting part of this story is that right after trashing HUGE amounts of value last September, they are openly acknowledging that their highly educated college graduates who they still pay vast salaries to (and who are never home enough with their own kids to SEE any of these behaviours) have a desperate desire to second guess the latest almost crashing wave of Social Media. Coming right after wonderful books on how Free is the future (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/12/books/review/Postrel-t.html) this really sends a shiver up my spine. All too like those lovely books about how the US economy had changed forever with the internet (required reading for those who had invested in Amazon and just wanted SOME reason to believe the values per user they were underwriting). But hey, I guess it is better than cutting open chickens and looking at the entrails like the Romans used to do. And no teenagers were harmed in the making of this story - aside from that poor schoolkid who will go back to school and now believe that his future can never live up to having been in the FT at 15 years old.
This is a very interesting study and, from what I have noticed around, very real!!! You forgot watching short videos and series online in the detriment of tv !
