Perhaps it would also be worth pointing out that News International once had none other than Clay Shirky on board as a consultant.
I have no idea whether Clay was advising them at the time (this was many years ago) in a way which is consistent with his current view, but it suggests that News, for one, didn't sleepwalk into the current situation. Either that, or what Clay now claims was obvious wasn't so obvious at the time. Certainly, I don't remember anyone one predicting at the time that a major new player would come along and eat up a sizable proportion of the ads market while creating zero content of its own.
It should be an interesting conference.
Smart aggregation is a key model for the future of media- whether traditional media likes it or not. There is no other way (for users) to keep track of a given field of interest unless one manually visits hundreds of sites or constantly stares at Twitter streams. Traditional publishers have a challenge with aggregation, since they are biased, and won't include their competitors' content. |
