The CDC has declared a national public health emergency. It is possible that you are better-informed about the situation than they are, but I don't see a lot of evidence of that in your post. (Where do you think Mexico is, anyway, if it's not part of the "Western world"? Asia?)
The key statistics here are that this flu has spread to 1400 people in a dozen countries in about a month, and about 6% of them have died; and that there's a global flu pandemic every 30 years or so that kills millions of people. Is this the year? It's more likely than any year since 1976. But it didn't happen in 1976; maybe it won't happen this year either. Still, it's prudent to prepare.
This is meat and drink to every single Emergency Org and media outlet, justifies all their budgets so I can safely predict they will go bananas as they did for SARS, Avian Flu etc.
I stick to my points - the issues are: (i)Mexicans are dying, others are not - that is the key issue (ii) It is still a non-material threat compared to fairly mundane ones like car deaths, this does not justify the media winding up the planet yet. As to being prudent, I agree - I myself am retiring to my underground bunker with filtered air and a month's supply of Tacos and Tequila I got from the Tex Mex down the road. Oh wait....
Every outbreak has started with just a few individuals getting sick. Remember that the cause is believed to be mutation of strains from Europe to Mexico, and with such a new mutation, a subsequent mutation or multiple is possible with all countries being exposed to the already mutated Mexico strain. I agree that it's not time to build bunkers, but, concern, precaution, & prevention (even if alert levels have to be raised to do so) is key in minimizing!
The numbers do not lie. It is not just a ploy to create big stories, increase ratings, or scare the population. Some issues the media does do a great job milking. This, is not one of them. Without awareness, without prevention, then the person who expresses beliefs as you do will turn around and say, why didn't someone do more! Mexico has gone from 17 dead to 150 dead in one day. Instead of looking at this from number of cases to population, why don't you look at the rate of increase in deaths. All pandemics start small. The scary thing is it has already gone global. |
