I haven't taken a trip without my Mac for a long, long time and needless to say my iPhone may as well be surgically attached to my palm. I am trying to disengage myself every so often because, quite frankly, I'm exhausted. I stopped being a slave to Google Reader a few months ago, I may not be up to date on the latest non-news story about a startup I don't actually care about, but I'm still a fully functional human being working in the online space. I'm going to San Francisco in a couple of weeks, the birthplace of much of these things that now sap every minute of our attention, and I hope to be unplugged for the majority of the trip.
I find Mycroft Holmes (yes, Sherlock's brother) very inspirational for thinking about finding significance and information overload and synthesis of various kinds.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycroft_Holmes I like to think he spends a lot of time with his feet up.
Ah, what you want is wisdom, not intelligence; "what's important for ME", not "what's unimportant for everybody."
Good luck finding that on the Internet; you'll have better luck simply creating that yourself. Looking forward...
