Twitter jumps Chasm - next step, Shark?

Twitter Growth data from Comscore

Data from Comscore confirms that Twitter has mainstreamed (not that you needed to see the data to know it - the Great Sleb Rush and plethora of books now being hastily penned on Twitter for Dummies etc is enough data) - see the chart above. (hat tip Don Dodge)

More interesting data from the Comscore report is that:

- the bulk of Twitter users are not in the USA - that's rare, to get a service so global so fast
- The largest groups of users are not "The Yoof", people under 24 are under-represented on the service. It has an older demographic (25-54) than the other Social Nets.

This means that its users are (i) richer (Adman-drool), (ii) email-overloaded (a new channel to flow over the congested one) and (iii) more time pressured (which is, we hypothesize, one reason why it has taken off)

It will soon, therefore, be time for the Early Adopters to declare Twitter over, jumping the shark, etc etc, as they move on to the Next New Thing - but we know not what it is yet.....

Well, if one were to believe Scoble and Louis Gray, it's over and FriendFeed is the new action place.

Sadly, FF is rather lame, and difficult to sell the benefits of without explaining complex filtering. And most people find the best way to filter is to not follow thousands of complete strangers, rather than learn a new tool.

It would be interesting to compare Twitter's user-profile with Facebook. Do you think that's where the under-24's are?

I don't think Friendfeed is the next thing, it has too high a signal to noise ratio in my experience, and requires lots of learning to tweak as you note.

If my own Yoof are anything to go by, the Teens and collge kids are on Facebook or using MSN (in terms of sheer hours used IM chat trumps everything)
