I find this a bit depressing. Never mind what research tells you about who is green or not, and who cares about 'pious' people who don't walk the walk? But why have such a sniggering attitude towards environmental issues? Forgive me, but it sounds like you're pleased that people will find it hard to 'afford' a less destructive lifestyle. What exactly is wrong with organic veg deliveries?
My point is that in other countries people have (years ago) accepted that it is a sensible thing to care about their impact on the environment, not a political or religious cult, or a chattering classes fad. In the UK there has been such resistance to things like recycling for example, which I find astounding. Elsewhere people recycle by default, not as a statement or luxury hobby. This article (http://www.terrainfirma.co.uk/2008/12/five-stupid-questions-i-get-asked-about.html) I saw a couple of days ago tells a different story, from a business point of view.
Mea Culpa for the snark, but imho its these "champagne green" attitudes that are holding back a lot of the green activities that in other countries are seen as normal and desirable - and lampooning is often a good way to get a point across (rational argument certainly hasn't worked so far.....)
As to where the impact really is - in the UK anyway, Biz energy is 2/3 of the usage, consumers are 1/3rd, and we are 2% of the global output vs US + China = c 40% - so in that sense, the economics tell me that a major depression will do more towards green interests than anything UK consumers can so. |
