I saw this list yesterday and had to bite my lip with the inclusion of some of the web 2.0 entrants alongside the billionaires of Google/Sky etc.
With many of those startup Web 2.0 companies reliant on ad revenue or the generosity of VC investment and praying heavily for an acquisition - it seems to me that one or two will not be here next year. Who makes up these lists anyway? Did you see the one from Scoble?
I bit my lip on the one from Scoble - if you ain't from SV and ain't a true believer...
Hello,
I'm an editor at BW who helped put together the list (with input from our readers and BW staff). I definitely think you put your finger on the issue of the moment--what happens to tech during this financial meltdown. I personally agree with your point that there will be consolidation this year as startups go under. Though I do believe some (who have funding to get through this and decent models) will come out on the other end, as we saw with the dotcom implosion. I would love to see who your readers come up for next year's list. (As a side note, we didn't include SirTim because he was on last year's list for the Semantic Web and we wanted to freshen up the list a bit). Again, I appreciate the thoughtful post on the list. Much food for thought.
Heather, thanks for commenting - as always, these lists are great for creating discussions and disagreements.
I agree with you re those who are funded now surviving (depending on how much vs burn rate of course) - linked to a much longer Fred Wilson post saying that in more detail than my semi-flippant one liner
Hello Heather
Thanks for responding. I decided to review your list one more time and to create my own list of people who I think are influencing the web. A few names off the top of my head: Saul Klein - Seed Camp, OpenCoffee, Led VC in Europe with Index Chris Messina - Citizen Space, pioneer on DiSO project, Microformats etc Ray Kuzweil - The Singularity Kevin Kelly - Brilliant thinker and writer on what comes beyond the FreeConomy http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2008/01/better_than_fre.php http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2008/09/where_attention.php Nicholas Carr - cloud computing http://www.roughtype.com/ I could name many more leading thinkers who are driving the direction of the web forward if you like. Personally I prefer to look at the technologies that are driving the web forward which are often developed by groups of smart people. GIMP/GData/Atom DiSo OpenID OAuth RDFa HTML5 GreaseMonkey TraceMonkey, V8, Webkit Chrome Portable Contacts etc. Some of this stuff is covered on www.thesocialweb.tv Hope this explains a little of the thinking behind my original post.
Hey Sam,
Love those names. I am stealing them for the nomination list for next year's list! |
