As I've said a million times "my granny doesn't have information overload". Many of these companies and services exist entirely for their own ends with limited external validation from customers outside the "community".
For me though the point at which Social Media jumped the shark was the point at which FriendFeed got money.
Great points Alan, not grumpy in the slightest
I tested the waters a while back - I asked a question about best articles on the economic downturn on 25th March on Twitter and got a total of one answer (from Nico Macdonald as it happens) http://twitter.com/deirdre/statuses/776803436 I suggested to Nico afterwards via DM, and he concurred, that I was clearly "off-topic" for the Twittersphere. But it is largely a community of geeks and marketing (and lately PR and SEO) types... in many ways at the minute it's just a more casualised community of practice, with added "free(conomic)ness". That said, don't make it a blanket statement that goes too deep - I'm a community manager too, and we ain't all eejits
@ Deirdre - I can see March being below the radar, I was just surprised yesterday to see nada on it, given that the last time anything like this happened was the Great Depression.
I wonder what would happen if you ran a session on startup strategy now, as Ad revenues decline? And Comm Mgrs as Eejits? - defitely not (btw you are one of the good guys), but some others.... I think "relentless" fits the bill! (thinking US here). |
