Awesome work chap. I think you have it spot on the (VC) trend is for "online social mobile platform" I suspect the same is true for Seedcamp 08 given last weeks similar image.
With the rising ubiquity of wifi and the improved mobile experience offered by devices like the iphone - mobile applications should come into their own finally. Yet I question whether we will see a new MSN (mobile social network) entrant given that MySpace, FB and LinkedIn already have good mobile applications available to extend the reach of their platforms. A new MSN incumbent starting from the mobile platform and then extending back to the web via PC access seems to me a difficult proposition. And yet never say never companies like chi.mp may still breach these walled gardens.
Fascinating analysis. If a start-up wanted to stand out next time round should they just repeat their name lots in their description?
I think the emergence of platform approaches is a trend in itself. Iteroperability of sites is key now for exposure and entrenchment. I would actually recommend any new start up build their core application logic, expose an API, then build the UI on top of that API as anyone else would (even if you don't publicise the API for months). That way you don't end up doing things twice, and folk can make powerful add-ons once the API is public. That's what we're trying to do with Hubdub. And incidentally, we have a market on who will win TechCrunch50 - currently leading is OtherInbox at 22%, that isn't social or a platform, just an email app http://www.hubdub.com/m15609/TechCrunch50_Which_company_will_win_Best_in_Show
@Sam - all our analysis says the stand-alone MSN's won't work in the short term, maybe except for niche apps as mobiles are still just too hard.
@Tom - yes, I'm fascinated by prediction markets including hubdub - I'm also watching the attempts to game the support on Twitter with interest. |
