Hmm... I used to think Apples were expensive but then I started comparing hardware and it seems to me that Dell let's you buy less computer than Apple.
Everytime I've gone to Dell's website to build an Apples-to-Apples (pun intended) comparison the prices are very similar. I just priced out a MacBook ($1399) and a comparable Dell Inspiron 1410 ($1442). I had to upgrade the HD on the MacBook to match the default Dell configuration. For the dell I had to upgrade the following: processor, OS, optical drive, wireless card, bluetooth, webcam, & battery. I don't see apple charging any more of a premium than Dell is. Dell just lures more people in with low priced base models. I just said "lure"... I must be a fanboi.
Interesting take - counters the guy who did the research here - perhaps thats a corollary of Ian's view that Apple starts off in line but then Dell etc standardise a config and drop prices - making it up on non standards.
For myself, evry time I've done like for like a similar PC has always been chaper.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the findings in this article are correct. I don't think a 100% markup is standard at the moment, but Apples are definitely more expensive. Also, I've always been a fan of building your own PC at a pretty high discount, and unless you want a hackintosh that's not going to fly with Apple.
RE: The TCO comment, that may be true (I've never used Vista, but I doubt the hassle is really so bad that it offsets a 50% markup), but the alternative is always to buy a cheaper PC and install Linux or BSD...best of both worlds. |
