More seriously... I think Twitter is another valuable way for people to communicate quickly -- just like many other forms of media are. It's useful in emergencies, but it's more analogous to a public group phone call than to hard news. Put another way, during an emergency, phone calls, Twitter and real reporting all have value.
@Tweetip - you are comparing Twitter to the MSM, that is not a valid comparison - try finding out when the first texts and emails alerted people instead.
@ Eric - I'm sure I read that you noted that Twitter had actually got the first alerts out before the Earthquake happened I'd agree with your serious point, but my article was just begging to be written
