Thanks for the post Alan - it's funny, because my wife is still on Twitter, as is my brother, and a few other close friends. Leaving full force may not be possible, but it is becoming more and more and I'm going to use it less and less.
I think you're onto the real problem with Twitter though that makes me more for services like identi.ca that are a bit more open, and that's that I don't own my followers or people I'm following on Twitter. I switch networks and they're gone. Perhaps if Twitter were to address this I'd change my attitude - that would be one of the profound things I mention in the article that would re-convince me. Thanks again for sharing.
Jesse, I think the issue is we are in the "walled garden" phase of social nets still, which makes it hard to leave if your friends don't/won't.
It's not in any of the walled garden players' interest to solve this as it increases stickiness for them - the solution must be an open net, cf the GGG that Tim Berners-Lee proposed. |
