TechCrunch has the O2 press release first - http://uk.techcrunch.com/2008/06/10/o2-confirms-free-iphone-deal-and-more/
Basically, there will be four tariffs: £30, £35, £45, and £75, and the price of the iPhone will go from free to £159 depending on tariff and iPhone model. That basically means you can get a 16GB iPhone for half the price of an old 16GB one, on a contract that actually costs you £5 less a month. Aggressive isn't the word for pricing like that... All those tariffs including unlimited 3G data, although there's no details on talk minutes or texts. What's really interesting, though, is that they're bundling free WiFi access with not only The Cloud, but also BT Openzone.
O2 has gained over 200,000 new customers as a result of iPhone. i.e people from other networks. Estimates of 5 times as many sales of the new iPhone would make O2 very powerful in the UK marketplace, with a very buoyant share price.
The competition - the operators without the iPhone - now want an iPhone buster - a phone with sexy features - but with enhancements to the OS and an APP Store etc. expect some significant movement in this area. Make no mistake - Apple will soon be dictating the direction of the Smartphone market - and not long after, the general mobile industry. They won't be a major manufacturer like Nokia for some time, but their earnings per device will be much higher and their design strategies will cause the market to sit up and follow or fail. Jim Ward
Jim, I'm not sure their earnings per device will actually be that much higher. Apple is no longer taking a chunk of the monthly contract for each subscriber, so it's getting more money per-device up front, but almost certainly less overall revenue.
It's noticable that O2 is offering essentially the same deal on the new iPhone to current owners - as long as they sign up for a new contract. So they're pretty keen to get old iPhone owners off those old contracts onto new ones - that tells you something about who's getting a better deal on the new phone.
Ian
I should have clarified. Their earnings per device will be down, although the operator is subsidising like any other manufacturer, but I believe that their AppStore will bring in significant revenue. App Developers have struggled to find an easy easy way to get apps onto handsets - the operators have controlled that. Now, a 30% commission to Apple will seem very enticing for many developers - and Apple will make significant overall revenue - if teh world catches on.. Jim Ward |
